Epson EcoTank ET-8500, a printer made for photos-The EcoTank line of printers makes it possible to do away with the traditional ink cartridge system and replace it with a series of higher-yield bottles. However, the subject of this review, the Epson EcoTank ET-8500, takes this idea to the extreme by using up to six colours to give your photos the maximum level of detail.
The Epson ET-8500 is a high-end multifunction printer that aims to offer greater creative freedom when it comes to realising your photos and documents, but without pushing the cost per page to the extreme. It broadly maintains a classic format with the ability to copy as well as scan with ease thanks to a touch screen and compatible wireless connectivity.

The name of these inks stands for "Epson Claria ET Premium" and they are intended for use in high-quality, durable and borderless printing up to A4 size. In addition to the classic colours yellow, cyan and magenta, the new grey photo ink together with the black photo ink are specifically dedicated to exceptional black and white photos, while the pigmented black ink completes the offer to make texts look sharper when printing double-sided sheets on plain paper.
Complementing the enhanced creative possibilities of its six inks, Epson's printers use advanced 'Micro Piezo' heatless technology to optimise the process of consistent, high-speed printing, with reduced energy consumption compared to previous generations and using fewer spare parts in the event of future damage.
Going into more technical details, the Epson EcoTank ET-8500 is basically composed of three trays from which you can store A4 and photo-size paper on its front inputs, ensuring the printer is always loaded and ready, while its rear input allows you to print on special paper media and cards, while the A4 main feed allows you to print on paper up to 1.3mm thick and 2m long, so you are not limited to work with all kinds of media.
In terms of printing, you can achieve a maximum resolution of 5760 x 1440 dpi with an impeccable speed of 32 pages/minute in both mono and colour (75 g/m² plain paper), plus a 25-second wait per 10 x 15 cm photo (Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper). Performance is broadly similar to that seen on the Epson EcoTank ET-2850.
What if you want to scan documents? In this case the resolution quality remains at 1200 dpi x 4800 dpi with support for BMP, JPEG, TIFF, Multi TIFF, PDF, searchable PDF and PNG document formats.
If there's one thing that can't be denied about the Epson EcoTank ET-8500, it's that it's designed to meet the needs of today's users, so actions can be performed completely cable-free and via mobile devices such as phones and tablets by simply downloading the Epson Smart Panel app.
Using Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct connectivity for faster transfer speeds over short distances, it's viable to print photos, copy documents or simply set up and manage your printer without having to resort to a PC. Certification support covers both Apple AirPrint and Mopria, as well as Epson's proprietary Connect technology.
Finally, if not, you can materialise files stored on SD cards and USB flash drives, as well as sync to your local home or office network via an Ethernet port.
