Appearing at CES 2019, the Alienware Area-51m is the most advanced gaming laptop in the world. As desktop gaming becomes more sophisticated, most gaming laptops only focus on the laptop side compared to the gaming itself. Well, the Alienware Area-51m has the sophistication of a gaming device like a desktop PC but packaged in a gaming laptop.

A common problem with laptops is that the installed clock will be outdated starting at the time of purchase, without the possibility to upgrade the CPU and graphics card. Thus there comes a time when you can no longer play the latest games.

The Area-51m seems to be able to solve the problem, even the devices inside support Intel Core processors for desktops. The difference is that this laptop has an embedded battery, screen and keyboard. Area-51 is designed to be able to replace the hard disk, RAM, battery, CPU and graphics card.

Replacing parts on this laptop is also easy with the removable screws and guides printed on the laptop case. That way you can remodel and reinstall it.

As co-founder of Alienware, Frank Azor sees Area-51 as a way to get back to the company's roots. Technically the Area-51 is the name of the company's very first laptop that was released about 17 years ago.

“We thought to ourselves, if we were Alienware in 2001, what would we do now?, said Azor.

Azor says that the goal isn't to make something super light or portable or mainstream or with good battery life. Rather, the Area-51m is a promise to the kind of product Alienware can create without price or practice limits.

One of the company's extensive benefits in the PC gaming space is creating the absolute best laptop possible for enthusiasts who have brought them this far.

"It's really not an engine for the mass market," said Azior.

The processor used in the Area-51m is a 9th Generation Intel i7 8700, i7-9700K or 19-900K, accompanied by a GeForce RTX2080. Those Intel processors are the fastest gaming CPUs you can buy.

Although Nvidia recently announced the GeForce RTX graphics chipset, it's actually not as potent as the desktop version. Azor says the Area-51m uses the most powerful version that can be overclocked as well with a framerate of around 5-10% of desktop graphics cards.

If a year from now it's still not that great, then thanks to the Area-51m's customizable nature, it can technically insert any Intel chip compatible with the Intel Z390 chipset. In addition, the graphics card can theoretically be upgraded.

The drawback of this gaming laptop that you need to watch out for is the battery life that is not expected to be great. The company expects a battery life of around a few hours for poor use. And maybe 45 minutes when actively used to play games.

The Area-51 has a 90Wh battery, one of the largest one can take on board. And it still requires two power adapters to run at high speed. The smaller 180 watt adapter is designed to be more portable. If you need maximum performance, use a second adapter, which is 180 watts, 240 watts or 330 watts depending on your choice of graphics card.

Both adapters need to be used in tandem to get the full experience because desktop-class laptops require desktop-class power as well. There are indeed two DC power ports available. There is also one Thunderbolt 3 port, three USB 3.1 ports, HDMI 2.0, Mini Display Port, Ethernet and an Alienware graphics amplifier port.

There's also a wide selection of 17.3-inch 1080p displays, from a basic 60Hz panel to options with Nvidia G-Sync and the integrated Tobii eye tracking device. There are also many choices of storage media, with two M.2 PCIe SSD slots and one hard disk slot. Thus there are many options for configuring storage media settings. There are also four RAM slots that can accommodate up to 64GB of 2400MHz memory.

Unfortunately, the many advanced features of the Area-51m make it quite heavy, which is around 4kg for a full configuration. The weight is indeed not exactly light, although the magnesium alloy casing makes it slightly lighter than its predecessor, the Alienware 17.

The price for the Alienware Area-51m starts at US$2,549 or around idr. 35.7 million.
