At first glance, Brother MFC-J985DW seems like a simple price for a typical multifunction inkjet printer (MFP), but inside it has a secret weapon. Ink cartridges that have enough capacity to print a very large number of pages, and even better, the cost of ink per page are cheap, outrageous for inkjet prices. Add to that a complete selection of connections and above average photo quality, and MFC-J985DW is an inkjet MFP for small offices, home-office, or micro-office use, or for multiple use at home and home office at its best. Brother MFC-J985DW is sold in the market today at a price range of 200 $.

There is also a versatile feeder that holds one sheet of paper. Auto-duplexer to print on both sides of the included paper sheets. MFC-J985DW can connect to PC via USB cable, or to network via Ethernet or Wi-Fi. It can also create a peer-to-peer direct connection with compatible devices either via Wi-Fi Direct or Near Field Communication (NFC). You can send scans directly from the printer to websites and cloud storage and services and like Facebook, Picasa, Flickr, Google Drive, Evernote, Dropbox, Box, onedrive, and OneNote.
The defining feature of MFC-J985DW is low cost running, and exceptional high capacity cartridge, for medium inkjet with price. The black cartridge gives about 2,400 pages, and sells for $ 23.99. Each color cartridge is good for about 1,200 pages, and is priced at $ 14.99. Operating costs are one penny per page monochrome and 4.7 cents per page of color, which is low for any type of printer and is unheard of for inkjet cheap.
At the same time that Brother introduced the MFC-J985DW, the company also launched the MFC-J985DW XL $ 269.99 at Amazon, which is the same printer but with three sets of ink cartridges included instead of one. For $ 100 more that you will pay for MFC-J985DW XL, you get $ 138 worth of extra ink. Both printers are not the first printers in the Inkvestment Brother line of color inkjet printers, but they are the lowest priced ones, and the first one we have reviewed.
The most common printer complaints we get from readers is the high cost of ink, and Brother is one of the few manufacturers to have taken steps to address this. HP Instant Ink is a program where you can choose, rather than buying individual cartridges, to pay a fixed base rate for printing up to a number of pages, plus a cost if you are printing additional pages. Epson EcoTank printers use ink bottles rather than cartridges; You either pour the ink from the bottle into the tank built into the printer, or for a high-capacity model, tighten the ink-packed ink-infusion bag bag somewhere in a bay designed for them.
Epson and HP have also used high-capacity ink cartridges at lower operating costs with their first-class inkjet laser printers such as the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-6590 $ 389.23 at Amazon and HP PageWide Pro MFP 577dw $ 765.00 at Amazon. But even this model, which is more capable and more expensive than the MFC-J985DW, has a higher running cost: 1.6 cents per page monochrome and 6.7 cents per color page for Epson WF-6590, and 1.3 cents per monochrome pages and 6.8 cents per color page for 577dw HP.
Although some of the other higher-end inkjet printers from Epson and HP also have a relatively low cost of operation, most cheap models from this and other manufacturers have much higher operating costs. Typically, less expensive printers, the higher the running cost, but the MFC-J985DW is both modestly priced and has low per-page costs.
I time MFC-J985DW on our business suite apps (using QualityLogic hardware and software) at 4.6 pages per minute (ppm), typical speed for inkjet MFP in price. (While the speed is judged based on text printing only, our test suite includes text pages, graphic pages, and pages with mixed content.) We timed Brother MFC-J870DW at 4.7ppm and HP Officejet Pro 6830 at 3.5ppm.
the overall output quality for the MFC-J985DW, based on our test, is average for inkjet, with slightly below-par text and graphics, and photos above par. However, the text should be good enough for business purposes except for those who need a small font.

Graphics are sufficient for some internal business use and may be good for PowerPoint handouts, but not for formal reports. MFC-J985DW does well in distinguishing between the same zone of nuance. Very thin, almost imperceptible colored lines, and many backgrounds appear slightly faded. Most of our test prints, including monochrome images, were good enough. One of the problems of the record is that there is a loss of detail in some bright areas.
This Brother MFC-J985DW runs very low cost alone is enough to make this MFP worthy of serious consideration. Other factors such as strong photo quality, various connection options, and the ability to print from or scan to both memory cards and USB thumb drives make it more attractive. If you are willing to pay more money up front, you can get greater cost savings over time with Brother MFC-J985DW XL. But thanks to the combination of MFC-J985DW for the features and values, the Brother MFC-J870DW replaces as our Editor's Choice for light use in small offices, or for dual use as home and office MFP.
