Well, through the Alienware m15 R4 and Alienware m17 R4 Dell has now succeeded in proving that a gaming laptop can carry a mechanical keyboard while maintaining a slim body profile.
Features of Dell Alienware m15 R4 and Alienware m17 R4
The secret is in the switch design. The Alienware m15 R4 and Alienware m17 R4 are the first gaming laptops with mechanical keyboards to adopt the ultra low profile Cherry MX switches.
Original Cherry MX switches generally measure around 18.5mm in height. Meanwhile, the MX ultra low profile is only 3.5mm high. This allows it to be attached to a laptop with a body profile that is less than 20.32 mm thick.
According to Dell and Cherry MX, the design of this switch is inspired by the gull-wing doors of the DeLorean sports car which resemble the wings of a butterfly. The mechanical button holder is divided into two parts which are connected by a spring system and stainless steel components. As a result, this switch can provide approximately 1.8mm of key travel, responsiveness, tactile and precise actuation.
Dell Alienware m15 R4 and Alienware m17 R4 specifications
Dell Alienware m15 R4 and Alienware m17 R4 come with similar specifications. The main difference is in the screen size. The Alienware m15 R4 has a screen size of 15 inches and the Alienware m17 has a screen size of 17 inches. This gaming laptop will be powered by processor options up to Intel Core i9-10980HK and GPU, RAM up to 32GB, M.2 SSD storage space up to 1TB option and graphics card with options up to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080.
Dell Alienware m15 R4 and Alienware m17 R4 prices
Both of these laptops are already available in the American market. The Dell Alienware m15 R4 starts at US$1799 and the Alienware m17 R4 starts at US$1899. For a model with a mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX Ultra Low Profile Switches you will have to shell out an extra US$150.
